Pangea Day, a landmark TED project, taps the power of film to strengthen tolerance and compassion while uniting millions of people to build a better future.
In a world where people are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict, it’s easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that - to help people see themselves in others - through the power of film.
On May 10, thousands of people worldwide will organize local Pangea Day events. They’ll be held in homes, schools and offices; backyards and town squares; movie theaters and beaches; Bedouin camps and public parks… anywhere people can gather.
More than 1,000 Pangea Day events worldwide will transmit photos, video, and text messages, to be incorporated in the live broadcast and the pangeaday.org web site.
24 short films have been selected from an international competition that generated more than 2,500 submissions from 100+ countries. They were chosen based on their ability to inspire, transform, and help us see the world through another person’s eyes. The winning films will be announced late April.
The Pangea Day program will be broadcast live from six locations worldwide: Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai and Rio de Janeiro, on May 10, 2008, at 18:00-22:00 GMT (check here local times) subtitled in Arabic, English, French, German, Hindi, Portuguese, and Spanish.
Anyone will be able watch it in person, online, on TV, on your mobile phone.
Of course, movies alone can’t change the world. But the people who watch them can. So following May 10, 2008, Pangea Day organizers will facilitate community-building activities around the world by connecting inspired viewers with numerous organizations which are already doing groundbreaking work.

Russian Ark, directed by Alexander Sokurov is a great movie.

Quite a challenging project initially, as this is a single 90-minute Steadicam sequence shot, with 2000 actors.
It takes place at the Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg, where the narrator evolves magically within the last 300 years of the Russian history, from a room to another.
There is no story, no plot, only two main characters, and it works brilliantly.
The costumes, the photography, are superb. The camera floats and threads its way between the characters, this is really impressive, especially in the ball scene.
For those who wants to buy the DVD, here is the FR subtitled version and the ENG subtitled version.
More about the director Alexander Sokourov.
